Star Trek (2009) Trailer

The first shot in the trailer is of Chris pine. This tells us that he is playing the main character in the film as he is the first person shown. We are then told that this is a science fiction film as  a shot of a space ship being blowup is shown. We are then shown in quick succession a shot of a character that looks like Chris pine, A woman with a baby and and the actual Chris pine. This suggests a link between the characters. A black screen appears and tells us that the film was directed by J.J. Abrams, a well known director. His name has a sci-fi glare effect on it. The next main character is introduced, Spock. This is a major character from the original episodes. so the well established fans of Star trek will know him. This is important as it is aimed at this fan group. The film then shows a more action based side as three characters are shown jumping and falling in special suits. It then returns to the sci-fi genre as a big space ship is shown coming out of a black hole. And a third character is revealed. He is played by Eris Bana, a well known actor. From the tattoos on his face and the otherworldly look of his skin suggests that he is the main antagonist of the film. This is backed up as again the trailer creates a link between this character, a massive death beam and a whole planet collapsing in on itself.

Another black screen is shown with the words 'Prepare for the beginning'. This suggests that is is just the first film of a whole saga. This will excite star trek fans an make them want to watch the film as they don't want to miss out on plot for the next film. The trailer then continues with the action scene from earlier with the three characters now fighting unknown aliens. It then has a montage of character shots and action shots leading up the the title of the film. The last shot in the trailer is of the release date, May 8 2009. Having it last is effective as it is more likely to be remembered.
Most of the trailer is focused of showing off the star cast and the iconic features that make it a Star Trek film, like the ship the Enterprise. This means that the main target audience for the film is the existing fans of the Star Trek franchise.

London has fallen Trailer

The first shot in the trailer is a tracking medium shot if two characters running. We can see from the background that these are important people to the plot as they have an escort of cars. This shot also tells us that Gerard Butler is in the film. This is a pull factor to the film as it has popular actors in it. This shot will also tell people that watched the first in the series, 'Olympus has fallen' that the same characters and actors are in the film. This could also serve as a pull factor for those that enjoyed the first film as the are getting the same again. After this there is a montage of quick shots that all build to show that it is set in London finalizing with a unmistakable shot of Buckingham palace with the iconic guards Marching in front. The film then loudly announces that is is an action film as a car, bridge and a building are blown up in sequence. Next the main characters are shown in a car chase with guns. A medium shot then destroys any doubt of the genre as Gerard butler is shown laying flat out the side of a car shooting the tires of the pursuer. This is only possible in action films without being killed.

The trailer then cuts to a new setting were the actor Morgan Freeman is revealed to be returning to the film series. Like with Gerard Butler this is a big pull factor as he is a popular and well accomplished actor. A montage of action shots is then shown. This is to appeal to the teenage boy group as this group live to see guns and explosions. We are then shown two close ups of people crying. This indicates that something bad happens during the film. The pace of the cuts increases as the trailer draws near the end and more explosions are shown. This causes a serge of adrenaline in the audience so when the title pops up at the end the remember the name of the film an that the want to se it, even if they don't remember anything else about the film. In the trailer we learn the basic out line of the plot, the American president is in London, a terror attack happens and he gets captured. It is then up to Gerard Butler to rescue him.

Expendables 3 Trailer

The trailer Like most action film trailers has next to no variation in the editing speed. It is all fast paced action shots with fire and gins. This makes the trailer feel more alive and active, suiting the genre of film it is promoting. The first shot is of men standing on top of a moving train followed by some generic foreign (not American) soldiers grabbing their guns. They then show a man jump from a moving train to a helicopter and the train crash with a huge fireball. This is all standard conventions of the action genre. The film is promoting itself as a true old style action film that most appeals to 12 year old boys. We are then shown two close ups of two of the old characters from the films before this one. They are played by Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham, two big and well known action stars. Other stars included in the trailer are Arnold Schwarzenegger and Harrison Ford, two other big actors. This star cast is a big selling point for the film. There is one thing however that breaks away from the conventions of the action film. There is a strong female character. This might be to appeal to a more female based audience. However this character is only seen twice quickly in the whole trailer suggesting that she is just to act as 'eye candy' for the greatly established male audience, most of whom are teenage.

Fury Trailer

The first shot is a silhouette of a column of tanks moving along a road. This immediately tells the audience that this is a war film as tanks are only used in war due to there expensive running costs. Also anyone who knows has an interest in WW2 will also immediately recognize that they are WW2 era tanks and therefore a WW2 war film. The second shot is of Brad Pitts face with a radio. This establishes that he is a major character, attracting people as he is an accomplished and popular actor they has successfully done WW2 films before. Next they show a shot of american soldiers firing there guns and being killed. However the pace of the cuts in this whole beginning section for the film remains slow, making the fighting scenes not chaotic action like in most trailers. This will make the film attract a more mature audience as apposed to lots of quick action which would attract a majority young teenage boy demographic.

The Pace of the film then speeds up massively as they move into the mid to end section of the trailer. There is montage of action shots with explosions. The cast are screaming directions at each other causing a sense of panic and tension amount the audience of the trailer. The pace then slows again as we see one of the characters crying, suggesting the negative impact of war caused by the stress. This again promotes itself as being intended for more mature audiences but the violence and action appeals to a male majority, so the film is aiming itself at older teen(16/17) to most male adults.

After this the pace speeds back up again to show another action montage. The trailer ends with a fire ball cause by a tank shooting at another tank, from which  the title 'Fury' is revealed. A title screen is then shown that tells us that it's release is in in November. The fact that no specific date is shown increases hype as they don't know exactly when it will come out so it gives them producers more to reveal over time.

War of The Worlds - Teaser trailer 3

The Trailer opens with a close up shot of Tom cruise's face face. This is effective as it immediately draws attention to a major selling point of the film. This is followed of a low angle shot of a little girl. This connotes that Tom Cruise's character.  Has to look after this girl. The low angle shot also connotes that the little girl is weak and defenceless. The Date of release-'June 29' Is revealed at the start of the trailer. This is so the audience can decide if the want to watch it during the trailer. The date and black screen fades an the first thing that we see is a armed soldier. This connotes that there will be some violence and conflict as this is what soldiers are for. After this we see to quick shots. The first is of Tom Cruise again, suggesting that he is the main character. The second shot was of a large crowd running in a panicked manner down a street. This connotes that the event in the film is a huge one involving the whole of society.

A close up shot of the little girl from before crying. This suggests that something tragic has happened. After this all hell breaks loose and the editing reflects this. The tempo of the cuts increases rapidly and many different shots of carnage and action are shown. This will appeal to the male demographic. The audience is then told that the director for the film is Steven Spielberg. Like with Tom Cruise this is a pull factor to the film as he is a well accomplished director. After this to confirm we are shown Tom Cruise's name quickly followed by a picture of his face. This creates a link, telling those that did not already know that this is tom cruise. The screen then fades to black a nd the title of revealed- 'War of The Worlds'. The final shot of the trailer is of the release date, reminding the audience that it is the 29 June.
